Why Is My Refrigerator Hot Between the Doors?

If your refrigerator feels warm or hot between the doors, it might seem alarming—but don’t panic. This area is called the “mullion,” and it’s supposed to stay slightly warm. However, excessive heat can signal a problem that needs attention.

Here’s how to troubleshoot and fix the issue.

1. Check for Dirty Condenser Coils

Dirty condenser coils are the most common cause. When dust and debris build up, your fridge can’t release heat properly.

Fix:

  • Unplug the fridge.
  • Locate the coils (usually at the back or underneath).
  • Use a coil brush or vacuum to clean thoroughly.
  • Plug back in and monitor for 24 hours.

2. Inspect the Door Gasket

Worn-out door seals can let warm air in, forcing the fridge to work harder and heating the mullion area.

Fix:

  • Check for gaps or cracks in the gasket.
  • Clean it with warm soapy water.
  • Replace the gasket if it’s brittle or damaged.

3. Fan or Compressor Overheating

If the condenser fan isn’t running or the compressor is overworking, the heat can transfer to the door area.

Fix:

  • Listen for the fan running.
  • If silent, the fan motor may need replacing.
  • If the compressor is constantly running, call a technician.

4. Fridge Too Close to the Wall

Lack of ventilation can trap heat inside the cabinet.

Fix:

  • Pull the fridge away from the wall (at least 2 inches).
  • Ensure there’s airflow around all sides.

Final Tip

Some fridges use a mullion heater to prevent condensation. If yours runs constantly, the energy saver switch may be off.

Fix:

  • Look for an “Energy Saver” button inside the fridge.
  • Turn it on to reduce unnecessary heat.
